With COVID-19 ravaging its way through our country, every day we are learning a twist to the plot: a new symptom or a new alarming statistic. It’s been an emotional rollercoaster for many, especially for local businesses teetering on the brink of permanent closures, families struggling financially, and for our kids learning to cope with our “new normal.”
With closure of schools in mid-March by order of Governor Sisolak, children lost a safe place to learn; to socialize; and, and for many, to receive their daily nutrition. Additionally, Nevada’s “28.2% unemployment rate . . . worse than the Great Depression,” according to the Reno Gazette Journal, has sent parents scrambling to provide for their children.
What once could have been a temporary financial burden has now become a financial impossibility for many families–$3,500 for hearing aids for the newly diagnosed deaf six-year-old boy; $1,200 occupational therapy for the child, now at home 24/7, with severe behavioral issues; $1,700 emergency room visit for four-year-old boy with severe asthma attack during the time of COVID-19; and even $700 for beds for three children newly reunited with their single father and previously sleeping on the floor.
These are the kids who no one else can or will help. Our assistance provides a life-altering service to the child, alleviates the financial and emotional burden for the parents/guardians, and helps the community by getting the care the child desperately needs to succeed.
Fortunately, we have remained open to assist these suffering children, to provide or align resources to help them thrive and maintain some sense of normalcy during unprecedented times. Thanks to our generous supporters of past fundraising events, generous grantors, and community supporters, we have reserves to keep us afloat financially as we deal with COVID-19 curveballs–like the cancelation of our spring Polka Dance Party Fundraiser.
Our fearless Board of Directors has set their sights on hosting our 4th Annual Golf Tournament Friday, September 18, 2020, at Wolf Run in Reno. With proper hygiene protocols and social distancing, we are working hard to create a much-needed fun day in the sun where we can share stories of the kids we help and raise some serious funds all while enjoying a late summer day on one of Duncan Golf Management’s beautiful properties.
You can help us by partnering with us to promote your business, purchase a ticket to play, or even just donate to support our mission if golf’s not your thing. With families struggling financially due to the COVID-19 fallout, our kids need your help more than ever to fund urgent medical, dental, and psychological emergent services.
